Old Train Photo At Last…
Our quest has been long but at last we now have a photo of the old train that so many people talk about in the park. To be honest this is not quite how I remember it (it’s an age thing!) – but it is a great picture.
You can still see the metal railings in place in the background and the wall of the depot behind. For those not aware of the location, just walk to the rear of the ‘bog garden’ then on to the golf course at the rear of the depot. You will see a large concrete fish in the middle of a square – that was the middle of the train circuit.
Thanks very much to Paul Gethin for the photo – I don’t suppose anyone has any pictures (or stories) of the cycle racing that used to take place in the park in the 60’s?

I remember riding these trains as a young child.Took a photo of the derelict site last sunday and visited this site to see if a photo existed of the trains. Thanks
Nice fashionable tracksuit worn by my brother turning away from the camera. I’m looking as youthful as ever. I can’t remember the photo myself and don’t think I’ve seen it. Must have been be in a dusty cupboard somewhere.
How many trains were there, though ? Three ? Four ? And what were their names ? Were they all named after Disney characters ?
Paul, not being an official train spotter I don’t know. Maybe you can enlighten us all?
Another question though – were they actually steam trains under the cunning disguise, ‘cos everyone always refers to them as the steam trains or is that just the trimmings?
Don
The train is exactly how I remember it, and so much fun! My brother and I only got to ride the train as a real treat. It was not a real steam train. I am sure the children of today are missing out!
