Anglers Doing No Favours

We are in the interim period where the newly formed group ‘Anglers of Sandall Park’ are waiting for the legalities to be sorted by the council so fishing can resume. In the meantime they are doing a good job as well.

They have removed substantial amounts of fishing debris from the lake and have been explaining to those that still insist on fishing what is planned and why it is best that they don’t continue fishing. But there are those who just refuse to stop fishing and they are not doing anyone any favours because unregulated fishing is still causing harm to the park wildlife.

Look fellas – you’re not doing fishing any favours. We are all working hard to help the reputation of anglers in the park and you are spoiling it for everyone. We have had literally dozens of phone calls reporting the injured goose featured below – needless to say the comments have not been in favour of fishing.

Give the ‘Anglers of Sandall Park’ a chance. If you really want help give the new angling contact Lucan Handley lucanhandley@ymail.com or ring him on 07970313564

I don’t know the history of where this bird came from, if it was a resident bird or one that has flown in along with others after the thaw but it was first noticed after the fishing ban had started. It is very posible that the bird was hooked elsewhere and because of the easy meals has taken up residence in the park.

We have tried on many occasions to capture the bird to remove the hooks but if you try to get close to it it will either hop into the lake or as it has on many occasions fly off else where for a couple of days.

It is because of injuries to birds that the Anglers of Sandal park are against fishing using floating baits or any type of spinning in the lake.

We dislike seeing any unnecessery harm to wildlife from what ever the cause and will keep a close eye on the lake at all times to make sure this type of thing does not happen again.

Craig,
The short answer is that fishing will start again the park and we (FoSP) are as desperate as the ‘Angler of Sandall Park’ to get this up and running. There has been a delay with the council but just today we have asked them to get a move on! Things cannot carry on as they are because unregulated fishing in the park is still carrying on and almost daily we are still getting reports of injured wildlife as a result. We are also aware of the ‘unnofficial’ work already being carried out by the AoSP which is great. When things finally get up and running with the new club it will be better for everyone.
