We Need Your Snippets

A member of our group is researching the history of the park so that we can produce a book, and we need anecdotes from people who have memories of it in its early days.

Do you have any snippets that we could use? Your name can be put to the article and any photographs that you supply. We would particularly like to hear about the cycling competitions that used to be held there in the 60’s and hopefully acquire some photo’s of them.

So, if you remember the golf course, the boats, the childrens boats, the train or anything else about the park, just send us a couple of paragraphs and we’ll do the rest.

‘The Park’ – Early 70’s…… Again

Yet another photo from an old book called The Park by Dorothy M. Glynn about Sandall Park taken in the early 70’s.

The kids are from Intake Infants school – anyone recognise anybody?

Looks like the Canada Geese ruled the park even then!

We have been featuring some photographs from a book called The Park with children from Intake Infants School visiting Sandall Park in the early 70’s.

We have had a couple of enquiries for details of the book – see the photo’s below for this information. Sadly the book is out of print.

We will include a couple more pictures later this week.

Morgue Planned for Sandall Park……….

Really? Well not actually now but it was in 1939 when the park was first opened.

With World war ll about to start planning permission was given for the boat house (now demolished) to be used as a morgue and could contain 16 bodies.

Not a lot of people know that!

New Old Photo’s(!)

We’ve come a across a selection of photo’s in an old book called The Park by Dorothy M. Glynn about Sandall Park taken in the early 70’s.

In the coming weeks we’ll be featuring a selection of these photo’s that that include Intake Infants school – it would be great to trace some of the people in the photo’s and find out if they still live local and come to the park.

We are currently writing a book ourselves about the history of the park park and how nice it would be to hear about a childs view of the park from the early 70’s.

Heritage Garden Launched – Official!

It’s always nice when a project comes to fruition and this morning the heritage garden project sponsored by Fake Festivals did just that.

The ribbon was cut to signify the projects completion by Margaret Frost who used to play in the park when she visited her grand parents in the bungalow that was on the site of the current cafe. Margaret was one of the first children to use the boats on the lake and she tells a great tale of life in the park.

Our thanks therefore go to Margaret as well as Jez Lee from Fake Festivals who sponsored the project.

Well the old trains not be there now but they were certainly popular in the 1970’s.

Here are three more brilliant photographs of the old childrens train in 1971 or 72.

Old Train Puzzle Solved?

One of the many questions we get asked about the park is “Where did the old trains go?”

We may have answer to this question! Look at the picture below. Look familiar? They certainly look the same as our old trains – they even have the same names.

The trains on this picture are in the West Hoe Park in Plymouth – apparently the operator told a visiting Doncastrian that the trains came from here. Not being content with the word of mouth we are currently making enquiries with the Plymouth Council to check that these are not just a batch of clones built in the sixties…….. watch this space for further info.
