Frozen Lake = Danger

The cold snap has come a bit later this year but the lake is now mostly frozen over – clearly unsafe but tempting for both the daft and dogs chasing wildlife. Just this afternoon (Saturday) children were seen walking on the lake ice. Somewhere in the coming weeks someone will die by falling through the ice – we don’t want that place to be Sandall Park.

Last years icy conditions saw several rescues from the lake – yes our lake. No matter what we say and do someone will again get into difficulty by falling through the ice.

Reminder – there is a life saving rope behind the counter in the cafe. This rope is for emergencies only. The first action should be to call the emergency services – hopefully now we have purchased the rope it will never be needed!

2. Rope kept behind the counter – ask staff;
3. Call emergency services – dial 999;
4. Use it at your own risk;
5. Return it to the cafe after use;
6. The Friends of Sandall Park and the Cafe accept no liability for the use of the equipment.

Race Night Proceeds Doubled

At the recent FoSP Race Night to raise funds for the park we made a superb profit of more than £500 including a donation to House of Fraser staff who attended the event and were raising money for their own local charity and a donation to The Friends of Martin Wells Lakes. We are therefore delighted to announce that this amount has been doubled with a donation from the Lloyds TSB Foundations.

Our thanks go to the Lloyds TSB Foundation for this generous donation and to two FOSP members Will and Neil Gethin and their family who organised such a successful evening.

Park Noticeboards Will Be Updated This Week

Winter is a hard time for volunteers in the park – especially updating the noticeboards which is normally done weekly in the summer.

If you are reading this you will know all the news anyway but not everyone has a computer – hence the need to update the noticeboards.

The boards will be updated this week with all the latest news on the play equipment grant and an appeal to dog owners to help us keep the play area free from dog fouling.

Grass Damage – Picnic Area

Some will have noticed the grass that has been churned up on the picnic area near the main car park – hard not to actually if you’ve been in the park in this area.

It would appear that a vehicle with legitimate access got stuck on the rather boggy grass. Anyway – it’s not the time for a witch hunt, it is unfortunate but these things happen and the council will make good the damage. It is amazing how grass does recover from these types of incidents.

The good news is that the missing concrete bollard that allowed access in this area has now been replaced. Thanks DMBC.

Fishing Club Membership and Fees

There is currently membership available with the Anglers of Sandall Park (AoSP.)

£3 for one or 2 rods (per person!) £5 for 3 rods again per person. The yearly fee is £25 which allows unlimited fishing at the park lake and night fishing by invitation/arrangement. You can see more information about the club by clicking here.

The lake now has a fountain which is great news for all anglers on the lake.

Trolley Dumper Caught

Why would anyone dump a shopping trolley in one of the lakes?

Why indeed. Well this week one such offender came a cropper when that person dumped a shopping trolley in the bog pond but was seen by park visitors and details reported to the authorities.

That person has been identified and has been dealt with. Our thanks to those who took action because the only reason that these people do this is because they think they will not be caught….. think again.

Time Capsule Ideas

FoSP are thinking of putting a time capsule beneath the play area that is planned near the main car park.

Seems like a good idea for Jubilee year. Ideas as to what to put in it would be appreciated – there is already an interesting thread on Facebook – click here.
