New Trees Planted

It always attracts attention (and comment) when trees are cut down. Normally there is a reason for such action – in the case of Playbuilders area the trees were in fact diseased and had to come down anyway.

Whenever possible FOSP try and plant more trees in the park if any are taken down. Six years ago many will remember the high winds that devastated many areas and brought down many trees in the park including an entire copse on the old golf course. As part of the golf course project an entire new copse of trees has this week been planted along with many other substantial trees in that area of the park. This should have taken place at the end of last year but because of the weather this was impossible. For full details of the Golf Course project click here.

Motorcyclists – Action Taken

It’s a long time since we have had problems with motorcycles in the park. In fact we have had none since the golf course project ‘opened up’ the park and made everywhere in the park more visible.

So it came as a shock last week when off road motorcycles returned to the park and caused not only damage to the grass but endangered visitors to the park. As a result of visitors actually standing up and being counted one youth has been arrested and dealt with by the police and two have been served with notices that mean that if they ride off road in that manner again their bikes can be seized and crushed.

Our thanks to the members of the public who gave details of the incident and were prepared to speak up. Also our thanks to the Safer Neighbourhood Team for the prompt and decisive action. Other offenders have yet to be dealt with by the police.

Spring Has Sprung!

Well it seems spring has sprung at last and today (Sunday 7th March) has certainly been the busiest of the year in the park so far.

The main car park was completly full and you could easily see from the road that it was very busy with families feeding the wildlife. It was also nice to see families playing games on the golf course – exactly as intended when the golf course project was being planned. What is especially pleasing is seeing the crocus and other plants coming up – we spent days and planted thousands and thousands of bulbs. Let’s hope a lot more come up.

Playbuilder Delayed Due To Wet Ground

The Playbuilder project near the main car park should have been completed last week. Unfortunately the ground has been waterlogged and the workmen have not been able to put the finishing touches to the area.

If the weather stays dry with a bit of luck the project should be completed soon.

Wow – don’t the black swans have a hard life? Not even hatched yet and they are under attack!

Another interesting picture here of a thief caught red handed when the guardian of the nest took a break – I would like to have heard the conversation that took place when the swan returned!

Swans On The Ball!

Genuine question though – the swan on the nest is the one with the red tag and this is the one we thought was the male (even though it is smaller). So the question is do the swans share the ‘nesting’ responsibilities or is the one on the nest usually the male?

Playbuilders Getting There

The weather has been terrible but the Playbuilders project is almost completed. As you can see from the photo it looks like it will an interesting place for the youngsters to play in the summer.

At 2.10pm today (28/02/10) an incident took place in the park where a member of the Friends of Sandall Park was assaulted. After the incident several park visitors came forward and said they were prepared to give statements to the police about the incident.

Firstly can we say thanks to those people and secondly if anyone else witnessed the incident (which involved motorcycles in the park) and are prepared to be witnesses can you please let us know.

FOSP are prepared to stand up and be counted to protect park visitors and it is reassuring that others are as well. The police are dealing with this incident.

Phew! – Black Swans Nesting……

Well it’s been a long wait since a black swan died last summer and was amazingly replaced by another swan within weeks.

Would the new pair get on? I think we now have an answer. The photo’s below from Derrick Bewell are the first of the ’swan blog’ for 2010. Let’s hope they produce many cygnets and that they have a bit better luck than in 2009.
